Golf has definitely gone online. Online golf instruction is all over the web, which is both good news and bad news. The good news about all of this online golf instruction is that we all now have access to golf instruction, tips and advice in a way that was previously not possible.

Everyone from established pros to people who just love the game and want to share their experience has gone to the web to share their pearls of wisdom. So there is plenty of instruction available out there. And that’s the good news.

The bad news is that it is not always easy to determine upfront the difference between good online golf instruction and useless online golf instruction. And some of it definitely is useless; or worse. So, let’s look at a few things for you to think about as you are evaluating the online options open to you.

First, the very best of the breed is done by folks who use the internet to augment their other training. Ideally, if you can find the right instructor to work with at the practice range, he or she will also have an online course or set of videos for you to reference. This helps to ensure that there is consistency between what your instructor is telling you and what you are learning online.

Many instructors do not have online golf instruction available, but it’s worth it if you can find it. If they don’t, ask for their recommendations. In all likelihood, they will have ideas about where to go on the web.

Second, avoid online sources that provide instruction as a way to get you to buy some product or service. Generally, their interest in you is relatively low beyond what they can do to get you to buy something. Consequently, not a lot of attention is paid to the quality of the instruction on their site.

Third, look for online golf instruction that provides a well thought out mixture of video and written instruction. Some sites offer just written instruction, which has its usefulness. And some offer just videos, which are also useful. But you need to be able to put the two together.

If you are watching a video of a great swing, you need to be able to determine what about the swing is great, and how it was performed.

Finally, bear in mind that while online golf instruction can be very useful in augmenting your overall training and instruction plan, it is not a great substitute for working with an instructors. Web site can’t talk to you about you. They can’t watch your swing, they don’t know your personality and they don’t know the areas in which you need to develop your skills.

Only an instructor can give you this kind of valuable insight, and since getting on top of your swing is such an individualized effort, it pays to be working with a real live person standing next to you and observing your swing.
