Golf Short Game

The golf short game is often the most overlooked by those new to the game, and yet it can be one of the most critical when it comes to driving your scores down. To some extent, this is just a question of math. Many more shots in the course of a round are shot within in the “short game” realm than at any other part. And yet it is the drive that most people practice most of the time.

They do so at their own peril. But part of the reason they do so is that the short game is much more complicated that is the case with drives or even long fairway shots. The golf short game is much more subject to correct club selection, course conditions, where the ball lays and so. So there is much more variability of circumstances that factor into the difficulty of any given short game shot.

So, practicing these shots is important when it comes to honing your skills. That said, even for those who are willing to work on this part of their game, the best ways to do so are not always apparent.

One way to get on top of that question is to go to a practice green and just dump a bunch of balls at different points around the green. Drop them on the green, in awkward places around the green, in the sand and so on. Make the shots challenging enough for them to reveal to you where the weaknesses exist in your game so that you can hone in on those and devote more practice energy to them.

Also, practice with different clubs for these shots. Obviously, sand shots require a special club, putters are almost always used on the green and chips will require their own clubs, but even within this retinue, practice with different clubs. Doing so will give you a feel for how the different clubs perform under different circumstances.

Another way is to hit multiple balls from the same place. Generally speaking, most of us know our weak spots and go right to them on any course or practice area. The hard part is in finding the discipline to go right to those spots and stay at them until you crack the code. Rather than spending all your instructor time at the tee, go to these spots, get his insight about what you are doing wrong and just stay on top of it until you make progress.

There are those who say that the best thing you can do for your long game is to get better at your short game, and they have a point. A poor golf short game puts added pressure on the tee shots, for starters. And then there is the idea that if you know you are not to perform well at the short end, you are likely to not do as well at the long end because you will be trying to avoid the short game.

So, consider focusing in on the golf short game and see if it doesn’t make a difference on your tee shots as well. Avoid the common pitfall of only practicing that part of your game that you are good at. Get good at the golf short game and you are bound to get better at the whole game.
